REMEMBERING : CARRIE FISHER SHINES ON

IT SEEMED, quite surreal last year writing this, and even more so, today . . . TWO years on. Today, I am sure many Star Wars fans and lovers of Carrie's work will be feeling the same, sharing posts and photographs of a woman, who was never dull, touched all she met, was a mountain of energy and fun and yet sadly, like many of us, carried another life, that sometimes worked against her, making even the sunniest of days, dark and exhausting. On December 27th 2016, the day we lost CARRIE FISHER, the shock rippled around the world, and I am sure today, many will again feel that disbelief. Many here of course will know her connection to Peter Cushing, through the movie, STAR WARS.

WITH CUSHING playing the evil TARKIN and Carrie the vulnerable PRINCESS LEIA Tarkin, together they played a key scene, with Peter cranking up his performance, as the cruel and most Machiavellian of characters in the Star Wars universe. Carrie later shared how difficult it had been for her to find the motivation, to hate Peter's Tarkin. She too, like many before her, had been charmed and moved, by his kindness and manner on set, it was quite a task to actually say those lines. Even though she left us a wonderful library of work on screen and on the page, it's a weird feeling, knowing, she isn't around to cheer us up and make us laugh in her interviews. As a teen she was my first crush, she dazzled and shone very brightly . . on screen and in life, a real Princess! 🙂 We remember Carrie today . ..

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JENNIE LINDEN AND STILL TIME TO BAG YOUR ROBIN HOOD BLU RAY!

TODAY IT'S A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to actress JENNIE LINDEN who fought the good fight against the Daleks with Peter Cushing as Dr Who in 'Dr Who and the Daleks' in 1965.. Jennie had a VERY full and quite accomplished carear where she appeared in several notable feature films and television series. One feature 'Women In Love' directed by Ken Russell in  1969 with its  infamous fireplace scene of two men wrestling naked, was in its day one of the most controversial films ever made in Britain! Audiences flocked to cinemas to be shocked and scandalised.

BUT BEFORE ALL THIS DRAMA and promise of super-stardom, back in 1965 Jennie played Barbara, niece to Peter Cushing's Dr Who in the first of AARU's big screen adaptions of the BBC television series Dr Who. The programme and it's most popular aliens. THE DALEKS were taking the country by storm, and DALEKMANIA had started. Sadly, when the producers decided to make another Dr Who Dalek film, Jenny's role was taken by another actress, Jill Curzon . . . Jennie also appeared opposite Lee Remick and Ian Holm in the film version of Iris Murdoch's novel 'A Severed Head' (1970). Her later film appearances included 'Vampira' (1974), 'Hedda' (1975), 'Valentino' (1977), and 'Charlie Muffin' (1979). Happy Birthday Jennie!

MORE THAN EYE CANDY : A FIGHTER ON AND OFF SCREEN : JULIE EGE REMEMBERED

TODAY WE REMEMBER JULIE EGE, a model and actress, she starred in the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1968) also in the Creatures The World Forgot (1971) for Hammer….she co-starred with Peter Cushing in Hammer's 'Legend Of The Seven Golden Vampires' (1974). Julie was much MORE than eye candy and thankfully, after her acting career moved on to a whole new life. Here is a very good feature on Julie, that gives the bigger picture and shows how she excelled right until her sad end . .

'For Ege, graduating as a nurse fulfilled a childhood dream, but  like others on this website, it also saved her life. While studying for her final exams, Ege discovered the early signs of breast cancer and believed that it was her new found knowledge that helped her detect the disease. Undeterred by the extensive medical treatment, including a mastectomy, she went on to work as a nurse for 22 years, facing the disease head on, including subsequent diagnoses of ovarian and lung cancer. She wrote her autobiography Naked, and continued to attend premieres and events in Oslo while at the Buskerud Hospital in Drammen. “She was a nurse and loved the job,” said her daughter Joanna to The Express newspaper. “You would never have known she had this rich, glamorous past if you’d met her. You would have just been struck by her energy, her smile and her determination to help people."  JUST CLICK HERE!

REMEMBERING CARRIE FISHER ONE YEAR ON . . .

IT STILL SEEMS quite surreal writing this, one year on. A year today we lost CARRIE FISHER. The shock rippled around the world, and I am sure today, many will again feel that disbelief. Many here of course will know her connection to Peter Cushing, through the movie, STAR WARS. As Tarkin, they together played a key scene, with Peter cranking up his performance, as the cruel and most Machiavellian of characters in the Star Wars universe. Carrie later shared how difficult it had been for her to find the motivation, to hate Peter's Tarkin. She too, like many before her, had been charmed and moved, by his kindness and manner on set, it was quite a task to actually say those lines.

WHILE CREATING the banner for today's post, I dug though many hundreds of images of Carrie in file. They were ALL magical. They ALL projected her sense of fun, wickedness and love of life. Many were taken long before she started that painful and disabling struggle, that tripped and distracted her later in life. There were so many photographs, picking one, was just too difficult, picking TWO, was really no easier. Just like the fact she is no longer here, it's just not good enough . . . She really stands as one of the brightest STARS, not just in that Star Wars Galaxy, but in the lives of so many that she continues to touch. And today, we remember CARRIE FISHER, as one very special star, who still shines . . . .
